It is Good Friday, and so it has been.
For the first time this year, I can confirm that 15 out of 18 hens are laying. I got 14 eggs today. High time, too. One duck is also laying.
I’ve got the family staying – my brother-in-law, sister and twin nieces.
Having a brother-in-law is a very handy thing. I have been meaning to build a hen run for a few months now, but it seemed like putting the 8 foot stobs in would be a challenge for someone like me who just peeks over the 5 foot mark. Neil has made short work of it, and the chicken wire is almost ready to go on. Thanks, Neil!
I have thought long and hard about fencing the hens in, but as I am wanting to increase egg production this summer, and as my hens have a large area in which to lay out, I decided that it was the best solution. When they dug up half the onions in the allotment, their fate was sealed. It is going to be a big area, so they will have tons of space. It also means I will be able to eat my lunch outside in peace!
If you want to see more of the hen having an ash bath, you can! (Not sure it is entirely good for them.) She was not particularly white when she emerged…
